As-Applied Map

The record of where product actually landed on a pass — built from the aircraft’s own logged flight track and rate data, as opposed to the prescription map that described where it was supposed to go.

Definition

A prescription map is a plan; an as-applied map is the receipt. During a spreading or seeding pass the aircraft logs its position and its working state continuously, and that log is turned into a map showing the ground the swath actually covered, where the passes overlapped, where anything was skipped, and what rate was being delivered across the field. The two maps are meant to be read together: laying the as-applied over the prescription is how you confirm the zones that were supposed to get a heavier rate actually did, and how a headland that got missed while turning becomes visible instead of being discovered at harvest. Because the record comes from the aircraft rather than from a person writing down what they think happened, it is a factual account of the pass — including the parts that did not go to plan.

In an Alberta Context

On an Alberta farm the as-applied map does three jobs. It closes the loop on variable-rate work, so a prescription built from zone soil tests can be checked rather than assumed. It documents the pass for programs and paperwork — cover-crop practice records under OFCAF, for instance, benefit from a dated record showing the acres that were actually seeded rather than the acres that were intended.
